Janssen Biotech, formerly Centocor Biotech, is a biotechnology company founded in Philadelphia, USA in 1979 and is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, a global manufacturer and supplier of healthcare products

The Janssen Biotech Engineering File Management System (EFMS) is based upon McLaren's Enterprise product suite running on the EMC – Documentum platform. EFMS is the central repository for the management of engineering data for all Janssen GMP projects (Manufacturing, R&D and Process Sciences). These documents and drawings are subject to regulatory inspections so the system is fully quality control audited and validated and is accessed globally from sites within USA, Ireland, Europe and India.

Early in 2012, ecms were tasked with migrating the Janssen Biotech EFMS system from a Windows server environment to a new Unix server environment as part of an McLaren Enterprise 3.7 solution upgrade project.

It was during this engagement that ecms took the opportunity to devise a migration methodology framework, utilising existing products and tools, which would enable this services offering to be easily repeated for other McLaren Enterprise solutions. We call this framework ecmsMigrator.

The Janssen Biotech EFMS migration was successfully completed in July 2012.

Migration Framework

Phase I - Migration Strategy

ecmsMigrator provides a proven migration framework which ensures that all current and legacy data is correctly classified and stored when migrated to a new solution.

Working closely with you, ecms produce a Migration Strategy document that identifies the object types that need to be migrated including an in-depth object mapping analysis whereby any data transformation rules, that may need to be applied in order to comply with new rules in the target system, are also identified and documented.

Phase II - Pre-Migration Reporting

Prior to migration, reporting scripts to quantify the numbers of the various object types are run. These are used to determine the optimum data extraction process as well as for post-migration validation to ensure the correct numbers of each object type have been migrated successfully.

Phase III - Data Extraction

Data extraction scripts are developed for each of the object types identified in Phase I. The metadata is extracted from the source system into Excel spreadsheets to facilitate any required data transformation (see Phase IV) and subsequent loading into the target system.

Phase IV - Data Transformation

Bespoke data transformation macros are developed as required using Excel VBA. These are executed prior to the data being loaded into the target system.

Phase V - Data Load

Using a combination of applications, the data is loaded into the target system.

Phase VI - Post-Migration Reporting

Post migration reporting scripts are run to verify the numbers of the various object types loaded. The report results are then cross-checked with the report results produced in Phase II to ensure compliance and assist with the client validation processes.

Introducing ecmsMigrator

The McLaren Enterprise product suit, although simple and intuitive to end-users, is in fact very complex and sophisticated from a data perspective. It incorporates a large number of Documentum Object Types, together with all the associated metadata, and of course the content files.
